Funny Stuff Sure-nuff

Did you know?

As we make our way across the country and back we continue to see crazy things.

Did you know there is a mercantile in Texas called the Sad Monkey? Do you have any idea how it might have gotten its name? Cute little store. The only monkeys were Dave and me.

Did you know outside of Amarillo is a huge pair of legs in athletic socks? Check out this website https://daytrippintexas.com/panhandle/the-giant-legs-of-amarillo/ if you want to know more, such as how Mary Shelly (author of Frankenstein) might be connected. Unfortunately, like the Drive-thru Museum of Wonder back in Alabama, we missed this one.

Did you know Pistachio Land is home of the World's Largest Pistachio? It's "the nuttiest place in New Mexico." We might have stopped if we knew there was also a winery.

Did you know a western wear store sports a billboard? It says, "Our idea of ranch dressing."

Did you know on Penny Lane there is a laundromat? It only takes quarters.

Did you know in Fallon, Nevada is the Frontier Liquor and Sporting Goods store? Always a good idea to mix liquor and guns, right?

Guns and Liquor??

Did you know in Nevada in the middle of nowhere, there is an establishment selling museum quality jewelry? Dave didn't trust them, so we didn't stop.

Did you know in Palm Springs there are Hot Springs and Box Springs? Not making this up.

Did you know you can buy patio furniture at BBQ Islands Furniture? At first we thought BBQ Islands was a restaurant.

Did you know in Indian City, AZ there is a billboard that appears to say "Fake Discounts." (The word No is faded and very hard to see.)

Did you know we drove through a B-17 bombing range?  Thanks, Naval Air Station Fallon.

Did you know on March 31 businesses were closed in AZ, but not because it was Sunday or Easter. It was Cesar Chavez Day.

Did you know in Arizona there was an amber DOT sign: "Expect Winter Weather Conditions"? Dave was not thrilled. Remember, the bridge ices before the roadway.

Did you know there is a bait and tackle store in the desert near Grand Canyon West?

Did you know some citrus trees in the Central Valley are covered with netting? Dave thinks it's to keep birds from eating the emerging fruit. Glad we put netting on our blueberry bushes before we left Florida!

Did you know near Meadview, AZ there is a sign, chock full of bullet holes, that reads, "Hunting Only. No Target Shooting."

Did you know there are hay trucks galore in California? We dubbed the drivers, "Hay Dudes."

Hay Dude

Did you know that for much of this trip we have seen signs informing us to use tire chains? Today we finally saw one telling us to remove them. Hallelujah!

Did you know there is a dry wash south of Death Valley, CA named, "Moby Ditch"?

Did you know O'Reilly Auto Parts is larger than the oral surgeon's office in Joshua Tree? If it's your truck or mouth that's oozin' you know what most people are choosin'.

Did you know Selma, CA is the Raisin Capital of the World? 90% of US raisins are produced within 8 miles of the town.

Did you know there is an Avenue 20 1/2 in Palisades, CO? Poor urban planning...

Did you know there is an actual Calevaras County with an annual Frog Jumping Jubilee? Want to learn how to jump a frog? Here's the answer at https://www.gocalaveras.com/frog-jump-secrets/
(Apologies to Mark Twain)

Did you also know that the above "frog town" has a road named Dogtown?

Did you know near Lake Tahoe is the Desolation Hotel?

Did you know if you want to go to Snake Creek Canyon, the road sign warns, "No Outlet. No Turn-around"? I wonder how many people are stuck at the end of that road...

Did you know Shake Ridge Road is on a fault line?

Did you know US Hwy 50 through Nevada is dubbed The Loneliest Highway in America? It surely is. Especially when the wife falls asleep...
(These pics were all taken on different sections of US 50.)

Did I mention, "Straight road, mountains in the distance."

Straight road, mountains in the distance. Oh, and we're on the bombing range here.

Did you know on Hwy 50 we saw one car on a turn-out? Dave said it was carpool parking.

Did you know Baker, NV has a building with a sign that reads "The Museum of the Future - Coming Soon" apparently has been coming soon for quite some time, but it's not false advertising. Yet.

The Museum of the Future - Coming Soon.

Did you know there are a variety of official highway "crossing" road signs? We've seen signs for:

  • Cows (see image below)
  • Happy cows (see happy image below)
  • Deer (We did actually see some crossing in Yosemite, but not at the crossing sign. I have a video to prove it. It could be used in court to convict those deer of not crossing legally. Their defense might be that jaywalking in California is legal if there is no imminent danger.)
  • Elk
  • Antelope (Saw a mama cow leave her 2 calves. Turns out she was running off an antelope that got too close.)
  • Horses (wild Mustangs, actually)
  • Tortoises (Apparently, according to a UC Davis study, desert tortoises are in danger of dying for a variety of reasons. GPS units affixed to tortoises provide data, but the units must be monitored. Hey! I might get a job monitoring tortoises every 15 minutes for 2 years. Your taxes at work...)
  • Bears
  • Peds (not the low-cut socks, nor performance-enhancing drugs, nor nurses who take care of children. We're talking pedestrians. These signs were more numerous than even the cow crossing signs!)
  • Trucks
  • Tractors
  • ATVs
  • Snowmobiles

Just a cow

Happy cow
