Palo Duro Canyon - Never Have I Ever!

 Palo Duro Canyon State Park

Never have I ever seen anything quite like the incredible Palo Duro Canyon State Park in Texas near Amarillo. Home to the second largest canyon in the US, this area of the Texas Panhandle is beautiful in a rugged, harsh way. This cliff (above) is visible from our campsite.Since a picture is worth... well, you know... I'll just post some of them.

This is my favorite rock formation. The white rock is gypsum.

We hiked past this cool "hole in the wall" on Thursday.

Dave is holding a piece of gypsum. We love it's translucence.
You can see a mesquite tree in the background.

This table top is called The Fortress.

It was so windy at the top of the canyon!

Directly behind our campsite we saw a wild turkey and these deer.

This guy saw the deer, too.

On the way back to Florida we will camp here again. At that time we hope to take time to do 2 things: hike to a formation called The Lighthouse and spray paint a car at the Cadillac Ranch.

The Lighthouse formation is the touchstone of the park.
We hope to hike here when we return going Eastbound.

I took a total of 97 photos at Palo Duro. I hope you enjoyed these favs. Not pictured are a few other parts of the park we enjoyed: a dove cooed both morning and night in a mesquite tree beside our camper; Dave saw a roadrunner scurry across the road (no, we didn't see Wile E. Coyote); we identified a number of plants, including yucca, sagebrush, red cedar, and prickly pear cactus. Finally, a woodpecker was trying to work his way into some palo duro - hard wood - that is the Rocky Mountain Juniper. It is the only green tree seen in all these photos.
